AL Winners Rivera & Nathan First-Ever Tie in 33-Year History of Award;
Bell Wins His First Rolaids Relief Man Honor

FORT WASHINGTON, PA – October 8, 2009 – The makers of ROLAIDS® antacid products today announced that the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera and the Twins’ Joe Nathan have been named co-winners of the 2009 American League Rolaids Relief Man Award® – the first-ever tie in the 33-year history of the award which honors the best relievers in baseball. Both closers amassed 132 Rolaids Relief Man points during the regular season. (Nathan did not accumulate or lose any points during Tuesday’s Twins vs. Tigers playoff.) San Diego’s Heath Bell took the National League Rolaids Relief® Man trophy with 121 points this season.

For Rivera, this marks his fifth Rolaids Relief Man Award®, tying him with Dan Quisenberry. Nathan and Bell are taking home their first Rolaids Relief® trophies.

All three winners will be presented with the iconic Rolaids Relief Man Award® trophy – a silver fireman’s helmet mounted on a silver pedestal – which has been presented to all winners since the award’s inception in 1976.

Rivera’s 44 saves this year gives him 526 for his career. He finished the season with 72 strikeouts and a 1.76 ERA. Nathan, who recorded 47 saves in 52 attempts and finished the season with 89 strikeouts and a 2.10 ERA, now has 247 career saves. Bell ended the year with 42 saves, 79 strikeouts and a 2.71 ERA.
