HOW IT WORKS
  • Three points for each save
  • One additional point for each "tough" save
  • Two points for each win
  • Two points deducted for each loss or "blown save"

NOTE: In the rare instance when a relief pitcher enters a game with a lead of more than three runs and the tying run is not on base, at bat or on deck (see save definition below) and gives up the lead before being replaced, he will be assessed a two-point penalty (as he would have had he blown a save situation). He will not be charged with a "blown save" since the opportunity for a save did not exist. The team also will be assessed a two-point penalty.

Save Definition

Official Scoring Rule 10.20
Credit the pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following:

1. He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club;
2. He is not the winning pitcher;
3. He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
1. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs
and pitches for at least one inning; or
2. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the
potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that
is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of
the first two batsmen he faces); or
3. He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than
one save may be credited in each game.

Other Definitions

TOUGH SAVE: The reliever comes in with the tying run on base and saves the game. Example: Reliever comes in with a 5-3 lead, two Outs and the bases loaded in the ninth.

TIES: In case of ties (for the monthly or annual awards), the relief pitcher (Or team, in the Team Bullpen race) with the better percentage of successful "save conversions" (saves divided by save opportunities) will be the winner. If a race is still tied, the pitcher (or team) with the lowest earned run average for relief appearances will be the winner.

BLOWN SAVE: When a relief pitcher enters a game in a save situation and departs or the game ends* with the save situation no longer in effect because he has given up the lead, he is charged with a "blown save." (If the save opportunity still exists when he leaves the game, he is not charged with a save opportunity. If the pitcher has not given up the lead when he leaves the game, though the save opportunity may no longer exist, he is not charged with a save opportunity.)

* Tie games that are called after they become official.

Evolution of the Scoring System

Original Scoring System (1976-1987): The scoring was relief wins and saves +2, relief losses -1.

Revised Scoring System (1988-1999): The scoring was changed to saves +3, relief wins +2, relief losses and "blown saves" -2.

Current Scoring System (2000-present): The scoring system is now saves +3, "tough saves" + I (in addition to save points), relief wins +2, relief losses and blown saves -2.
